Gradient fills aren’t just for backgrounds and shapes — you can apply them directly to text in Canva as well. It’s a useful technique for headings or short emphasis text where you want something more visually interesting than a flat colour, without adding effects or extra layers to your design.

This tutorial walks through how to apply a custom gradient to a text box in Canva, including how to choose your colours, add multiple colour stops, and select from the available gradient styles. There’s one limitation worth knowing about upfront: gradients only work on editable text, not on decorative text-style graphics from the Elements library.

Gradients are available on the free plan, but saving them to your Brand Kit for reuse requires Canva Pro. You can start a free trial here if you want to set that up as you go.

Gradients aren’t just for shapes and backgrounds, you can also apply them directly to text in Canva. This can be a great way to add visual interest to headings or short emphasis text without relying on effects or shadows.

Here’s how to do it.

Start by adding a text box to your design. You can click the Text tab in the sidebar and choose a heading or body text style, or press T on your keyboard to quickly add a text box.

Type out your text and adjust the font, size, and spacing as needed.

Once your text box is selected, click the colour tile in the floating toolbar. This opens the colour panel, and you’ll want to click the plus sign under Document colours, at which point you’ll see two tabs: Solid colour and Gradient.

Switch to the Gradient tab, and Canva will automatically apply a two-colour gradient to your text.

From here, you can click on each gradient stop to choose your own colours, and you can either select colours from your brand palette or enter specific hex codes. If you’d like, you can also add additional colour stops to create a multi-colour gradient.

Below the colour stops, you’ll see Canva’s preset gradient styles, which include several linear and circular options. Click through the available styles to choose the one that gives you the look you want.

At this time, you can’t create your own custom gradient style, but you do have full control over the colours and their order.

Gradients can only be applied to *editable* text, so if you’re using decorative graphics from the Elements library that look like text, gradients will likely not be available.
