Discover how to regain control over how your Canva designs open with a simple settings update!

When Canva’s Glow Up update introduced its design preview mode in May 2024, it added an extra step to opening designs, frustrating many users accustomed to the automatic “open in a new tab” feature.

Fortunately, Canva has listened to user feedback and as of January 2025, a new option on the web browser version of Canva allows you to choose your preferred workflow.

When Canva rolled out their Glow Up update in May 2024, many users noticed a change in how designs opened. Previously, clicking on a design automatically opened it in a new tab. However, the new Preview Mode introduced an extra step, slowing down the process and frustrating those who were accustomed to the previous behaviour.

Fortunately Canva has listened to user feedback and as of late January 2025, they’ve introduced a new option on the web browser version of Canva that lets you decide how you want your designs to open.

You can now choose to:

  • Open designs directly in a new tab (like before), or
  • Stick with the updated Preview Mode.

Here’s how to adjust this setting:

  1. Go to your Account Settings in Canva.
  2. Scroll down until you see the “Link Opening” section, and
  3. Toggle on the “Open designs in a new tab” option if that suits your workflow better.

This update gives you control over how you work in Canva.
