If you’ve ever tried fitting an image into a Canva frame and found that it just doesn’t seem to work right, you’re not alone.

I’ve actually covered this topic more generally before in a previous post and video, which I’ll link to below this video.

But I wanted to dive deeper into a specific issue that many of you have mentioned—what to do when a headshot or photo of a person gets their head cropped off when pulled into a Canva frame.

This problem is particularly common when there isn’t enough space above the person’s head in the original photo. Canva tries to fill the frame, which often results in cropping off parts of the image you want to keep.

To prevent this issue, you can adjust the photo to create more space above the person’s head. This added space allows Canva to crop the image without cutting off the head. Here’s how you can do it:

Step 1: Create a New Design and Add the Photo

Start by creating a new design in Canva. You can choose any size, but it’s usually easiest to match the dimensions of the frame you’ll be using later. Upload the photo of the person and add it to your design. Make sure to position the photo so there’s some blank space above the person’s head.

Step 2: Use the Magic Expand Feature

Once the photo is positioned, use Canva’s Magic Expand feature to create additional space above the person’s head. This feature intelligently expands the background, filling in the space without distorting the image.

If you’re unfamiliar with Magic Expand, I’ve also recorded a tutorial in the past that walks you through the process of using that feature, and I’ll link to it in the description below this video.

Step 3: Download the Adjusted Image

After expanding the space above the person’s head, download your design as an image.

Step 4: Add the Image to the Frame

Now that you’ve created extra space above the person’s head and saved the adjusted image, you’re ready to use it in your project. Drag the new image into the frame in Canva.

With the additional space, Canva should now crop the blank area above the person’s head rather than cutting off any part of the head. This will keep your design looking clean and professional.
