A colour-to-transparent gradient is one of those techniques that’s worth having in your back pocket. It’s useful any time you want a soft fade — behind text to improve readability, along the edge of an image, or as a subtle overlay that doesn’t overpower what’s underneath it.

The approach in Canva is straightforward once you know where to look. This tutorial walks through how to create the fade by reducing one gradient stop’s opacity to zero, and how to save it to your Brand Kit so it’s ready to use without rebuilding it each time.

Gradients are available on the free plan, but saving them to your Brand Kit for consistent reuse requires Canva Pro. You can start a free trial here if you’d like to get that set up.

Creating a colour-to-transparent gradient in Canva can be useful when you want a soft fade, maybe to use behind text or along the edge of an image.

Start by selecting the element you want to apply the gradient to, for example a rectangle, and then click the colour option in the floating tool bar. Then you’re going to click the plus sign under Document colours and switch to the Gradient tab.

You’ll want to choose your desired colour for one gradient stop and then for the second stop, open the colour picker and reduce the opacity slider all the way down to zero. This creates the transparent end of the gradient.

Once your colours are set, click through Canva’s preset linear and circular gradient styles to choose the direction or shape of the fade that works best for your layout.

The fade effect comes from the combination of colour and transparency. You’re still choosing from Canva’s existing gradient styles, but you’re simply adjusting one end to be fully transparent.

If you’re using this fade frequently and want to keep it consistent across multiple designs, you can also recreate and save the gradient inside your Brand Kit.

That way, it’s always available when you need it, and you won’t have to rebuild the fade from scratch each time.
