When I do Canva trainings and podcast interviews, I typically emphasize the importance of focusing on the fundamentals of using Canva, including how to set up and use the brand kit, how to get organized in Canva, and how to choose and customize templates to support your business and marketing needs.

But there is always a LOT of interest from folks about the other, perhaps more exciting tools in Canva, particularly Canva’s AI functionality found as part of their Magic Studio features.

So let’s take a look at one of those tools: Magic Grab.

Essentially Magic Grab enables you to easily separate the subject of a photo from its background, and then once you’ve done that, you can easily reposition or resize the subject.

For example, let’s say I wanted to use one of my past brand photos in a cover image, but maybe I want to have a little more open space on the left side here so that I could more easily add a headline or some copy or a call to action.

I’ll select the image and then I’ll pop up here to Edit Photo, and I’ll choose Magic Grab.

And when it’s done processing, you’ll see that I can now magically grab the subject portion of the image and I can now move it around in order to reposition it where I want, or I could even resize it if I needed to.

Note that Magic Grab is not available on Canva’s free plan and is currently only available on a Pro, Teams, Education or Nonprofit account.
